Washington, DC — Today, Mary Small, Chief Strategy Officer of Indivisible, released the following statement:
“This is a very big first step from President Biden, who has historically been on the conservative edge of the party on issues of court reform. It puts court reform in the mainstream, at a time when the public is more aware and outraged than ever at the far-right justices’ oversteps and corruption. This is a shift that’s going to have consequences in a very good way.
“The ball is now in Congress’ court to step up and legislate on this. They must follow Biden’s lead and respond to the crisis on the Supreme Court with the urgency that this moment requires.
“The Supreme Court is plagued by unethical, corrupt justices and a conservative supermajority intent on furthering the MAGA agenda from the bench. No one solution can fix all of that. Term limits and an enforceable code of ethics are a critical first step, but they must be just the first of many reforms to restore legitimacy to the court.
“President Biden is right to take action to replace basic restrictions on presidential immunity. The idea that presidents should have the powers of kings is not only wrong, it’s also wildly unpopular. Let Republicans put themselves on the record against the Not Above The Law Amendment. Their voters should know where they stand on democracy.”
