Washington, DC — The Indivisible Project’s associate policy director Elizabeth Beavers issued the following statement after the Senate voted to overturn Donald Trump's national emergency declaration:
“A historic power grab has now been met with a historic rebuke. On a bipartisan basis, the Senate has joined the House in voting to terminate Trump’s fraudulent “national emergency.” Never before has Congress overturned a national emergency declaration — but, then again, never before has a president used a fake emergency to subvert the will of the people and Congress and fund something they specifically rejected. This was an illegal power grab rooted in hate that erodes our democratic norms and slides us further into autocracy.”
“We applaud the House and Senate for checking Trump and we urge them to continue to aggressively assert their powers as a co-equal branch of government. With 12 Republican Senators crossing party lines to join Democrats in rebuking Trump, it’s clear that what Trump is attempting is a blatant threat to our democracy. Because Trump has said he plans to veto this bill, we look to Congress to turn its attention to defunding Trump’s hateful agenda.”
