WASHINGTON, D.C. — With one week remaining of congressional recess, a coalition of some of the country’s largest grassroots organizations is continuing to drive constituent pressure on impeachment over the coming October recess. The coalition—which includes By the People, CREDO Action, Indivisible, March For Truth, MoveOn, Mainers for Accountable Leadership, Public Citizen, Stand Up America, Women’s March, and more—will continue to organize constituents to show their support for the Democratic lawmakers who have publicly backed the impeachment inquiry, while also ramping up pressure on Republicans.
Over the congressional recess, the grassroots organizations have used ImpeachNow.org to push activists to make calls, attend town halls, and mobilize across the country to ensure Congress does its constitutional duty by swiftly impeaching Donald Trump. The campaign has resulted in a groundswell of public support of the impeachment inquiry, with several polls showing that more Americans support it than oppose it.
At town halls across the country, Democratic representatives who recently announced support for the impeachment inquiry have been met with applause and standing ovations from constituents, including Rep. Anthony Delgado (D-NY), Rep. Elaine Luria (D-VA), Rep. Max Rose (D-NY), and Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI). From Washington, D.C. to Maine, activists have also rallied in support of the inquiry and to urge Congress to swiftly vote on articles of impeachment.
Meanwhile, House and Senate Republicans have faced increased pressure from constituents to support the impeachment inquiry, with Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Sen. Martha McSally (R-AZ) facing tough questions at public events and protests. Activists have also confronted Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) and Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) on impeachment.
“Americans across race, gender, class, and geography are coming together to stop Trump’s abuses of power and demand a country where we are all equal before the law. Our movement successfully pressured the House of Representatives to advance impeachment proceedings. On Sunday, October 13th, just before Congress returns to work in DC, we will deliver a final sendoff to our elected representatives with marches nationwide demanding they impeach now,” said Alexandra Flores-Quilty, Executive Director of By the People.
"Grassroots pressure needs to be kept high on members of Congress to support a broad set of articles of impeachment that accounts for all of Trump's offenses—from collusion with Ukraine and Russia to separating families to violating the emoluments clause," said Thaís Marques, Campaign Manager for CREDO Action. "Holding Trump accountable is something that needs to be acted on immediately; there can be no more delays and we can't rely on the 2020 election to right the course of our country. Otherwise, Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats will be abdicating their responsibility to protect the moral fabric of our country and to uphold their constitutional obligation to protect the American people."
“Republicans have changed their message from ‘Trump is innocent' to ‘Actually, requesting foreign countries illegally interfere with our elections is no big deal.’ No one is falling for this rhetorical trick. Indivisibles will continue to pressure their Members of Congress on impeachment—which already has support from a majority of the House—so that Republicans will not be able to continue to justify their baseless defense of this President,” said Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of the Indivisible Project.
“We’ve made incredible progress in the fight to impeach Donald Trump thanks to a groundswell of grassroots activism, but we cannot take our foot off the gas and we will not let Republicans off the hook," said Brett Edkins, Political Director of Stand Up America. “As congressional recess comes to a close, we will demand that all lawmakers—both Democrats and Republicans—put country over party by supporting the ongoing impeachment inquiry. No more excuses and no more delays.”
