Washington, DC — This morning, a coalition of some of the country’s largest grassroots organizations—including By The People, CREDO Action, Indivisible, March For Truth, MoveOn, Mainers for Accountable Leadership, Public Citizen, Stand Up America, Women’s March, and more—are announcing a coordinated continuing effort to drive constituent pressure on impeachment over the coming October recess.
As described on the newly launched website, ImpeachNow.org: “Activists nationwide are joining together to make a unified demand of our representatives: Go back to Washington, do your jobs, and take a vote to impeach Trump as soon as possible.”
On September 24, Speaker Pelosi did what activists have been asking for months: opened a formal House inquiry into impeachment. As of today, the House is planning to break for recess next week, sending Members of Congress home to their districts.
In the coming weeks, centralizing information on ImpeachNow.org the progressive groups will coordinate to drive activists to make calls, attend town halls, and mobilize across the country to push Democrats and Republicans to do their constitutional duty and move impeachment proceedings forward.
“Our movement successfully pressured the House of Representatives to advance impeachment proceedings. Now, House leadership must cancel their recess, do their job, and vote to #ImpeachNow. But, Congress will only pass articles of impeachment if millions of us demand it. Impeachment is the people’s tool to stop what we cannot tolerate. We are calling for mobilizations nationwide until our elected representatives impeach this lawless President and Americans everywhere can use this site to organize or attend one where they live,” said Alexandra Flores-Quilty, Executive Director of By the People, the grassroots campaign to impeach Trump.
"There can be no more delays, no more pointless political maneuvering to keep the impeachment process stalled in a misguided, fear-fueled attempt to provide cover for centrist Democrats," said CREDO Action campaign manager Thaís Marques. "Donald Trump has shown a clear pattern of repeated abuses of power and blatant disregard for the Constitution all while terrorizing communities of color, immigrants, and working families. Articles of impeachment must be voted out of committee by November 1, and Speaker Pelosi must call for a full floor vote by November 15 -- we can't wait any longer."
“Every day that Trump is president is another day our democracy is broken and our national security is at risk. We're glad Speaker Pelosi finally said out loud what constituents have been saying for months: Donald Trump has betrayed his oath of office, betrayed our national security, and betrayed the integrity of our elections. Now, we need to see her words backed up with action,” said Leah Greenberg, co-executive director of the Indivisible Project. “The activists who built the blue wave and put Democrats in charge expect them to do the right thing, and lead.”
“Unchecked Executive power will be checked and removed by the leaders installed by the people. Many tried to silence the Scrappy grassroots leaders that built this movement but we spoke out unwilling to remain silent while our communities were terrorized by policies and rhetoric grounded in hate and white supremacy,” said Marie Follayttar, Executive Director of Mainers for Accountable Leadership. “We refuse to be complicit and will actively work to keep our republic. Every day, we are striving for a more perfect union and when Trump is removed from power we will build a country that works for all of us. “
“The ground has shifted. The transcript released today contains evidence of high crimes in plain language,” said Justin Hendrix, organizer for March for Truth. It is time for Congress to urgently act to hold this President to account- to defend our national security, the sovereignty of our elections and the rule of law. There is no time to spare.”
“Before Donald Trump extorted the President of Ukraine to get help on winning reelection, there was already a formal impeachment inquiry into his impeachable crimes,” said David Sievers, Campaign Director with MoveOn. “Nearly every Democrat in Congress sees impeachment as part of the solemn oath they took to defend our country from just that kind of lawlessness. This recess, our members are going to tell their Representatives that we’ve got their backs.”
“This is a historic win for the tireless grassroots activists who have kept the pressure on Congress to begin impeachment proceedings, but the fight is far from over—and we must ensure that Congress does not slow-walk this process," said Brett Edkins, Political Director of Stand Up America. “We urge Speaker Pelosi to implement an aggressive hearing schedule, swiftly draft articles of impeachment, and vote to impeach Trump this fall. We will not let any lawmakers off the hook—Democrats or Republicans—if they slow down the process to hold Donald Trump accountable."
“Grassroots activists have been echoing the concerns of constituents across America in demanding that Speaker Pelosi launch an impeachment inquiry. Now, we urge members of Congress to cancel their recess and #ImpeachNow. We have had enough of Trump’s blatant disregard for this country’s constitution and laws. The time is now to take back our country,” said Rachel Carmona, COO, Women’s March.
