Washington- María Urbina, Managing Director of Indivisible, released the following statement:
“This is a promise kept. No one should be in jail solely for using or possessing marijuana: the president has been right to say it, and these are the right steps to make it real.
“Today’s announcement will immediately make things better and fairer for thousands of people, people caught in our broken legal system, people in our lives and our communities.
“This will be incredibly popular. We hope governors are ready to answer the President’s challenge: will they follow suit? We know voters will be asking them.
“This is a huge step forward, and we need to keep both chambers to protect this win and the many other big things Democrats have achieved this year that have improved people’s lives.
“Our country’s marijuana laws are a legal weapon that have had disproportionate effects on communities in the margins. And they've been a national moral embarrassment: white and Black and brown people use marijuana at similar rates, but a disproportionate number of people arrested and convicted are Black and brown. It’s time for them to be a thing of the past. This is a big step toward justice.”

About the Indivisible Project
The Indivisible Project (501c4) is a social movement non-profit driven by a vision of a real democracy - of, by, and for the people. Indivisible began in 2016 as a viral guide to resisting Trump’s agenda. Today, the Indivisible movement is a network of thousands of local groups and millions of activists across every state. The Indivisible Project drives campaigns for bold progressive policies, lobbies Congress, and equips activists with tools to build lasting progressive power, everywhere. Together, we fight to defeat the rightwing takeover of American government and build an inclusive democracy.
