Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible’s Chief Campaigns Officer Sarah Dohl released the following statement:
“Spineless. That’s the only word for the 10 Senate Democrats who handed MAGA Republicans a gift they didn’t deserve. The Laken Riley Act is a racist, xenophobic attack on immigrants that shreds constitutional rights and hands power to extremists like Ken Paxton to hijack federal immigration policy. It’s not just cruel—it’s a train wreck of chaos and bad faith. And yet, Senate Democrats caved.
“This isn’t complicated. MAGA Republicans aren’t negotiating in good faith. They took a messaging bill designed to scare voters, rejected every amendment to fix its gaping flaws, and made it even more extreme. Democrats who thought they could reason with this madness should be ashamed.
“Next week, Senate Democrats will have one last chance to stop this bill before it heads to the House. Let’s be crystal clear: a vote to advance this legislation is a vote to betray Dreamers, immigrant families, and the basic principles of justice. If Senate Democrats fail again, it will fall to House Democrats to clean up their mess.
“House Democrats are showing us how to fight. They’ve already shown courage by standing together to crush MAGA’s anti-trans ‘Child Predator Empowerment Act.’ But this fight will demand even more. If this bill reaches the House, Democrats must go all in to kill it. No excuses, no wavering.
“This bill is a defining moment. It’s about whether Democrats will stand with immigrant communities or let MAGA extremism steamroll our democracy. Every single Democrat in the Senate and the House must choose a side—because we are watching, and we will not forget.”
