Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible announced its endorsement of Christy Smith in the race for California’s 25th Congressional District.
Due to the timing of the special election (March 3), Indivisible is making a late addition to our second round of endorsements. It’s great to see candidates respond to grassroots energy by embracing a people-first approach to fundraising, and this decision is reflective of how Christy will lead in Congress.
“Christy Smith knows that America is at a critical crossroads, and that who we send to Congress will have lasting repercussions. With Christy, we know the 25th district will have a true champion that will prioritize systemic change. Christy has made it clear that she will protect the vital programs so many Americans rely on like Social Security and Medicare, and she will fight to advance progressive values,” Indivisible’s IE political director Lucy Solomon said. “We’re proud to follow Indivisibles in the district in endorsing Christy Smith, who we know will work tirelessly to continue the good work Katie Hill began.”
Christy Smith is currently a member of California’s State Assembly after defeating an incumbent Republican during the Blue Wave of 2018. Before entering politics, Smith worked on education policy as an analyst for the US Department of Education and spent two terms on the board of Newhall School District. She’s running in the special election to replace Katie Hill, who resigned in late 2019.
“I followed Christy Smith's actions as a representative in the state's General Assembly. There, she's shown a devotion to representing the needs of our state's most vulnerable populations and prescribing progressive policy solutions to solve those concerns. I'm confident she will display the same type of political courage once in DC,” said Niki Mohr, a member of Indivisible CA-25 Simi Valley Porter Ranch’s leadership team. “I believe that Christy Smith will vote with her conscience and her constituents and not with special interests. California's 25th district needs a principled representative who is guided by empathy and understanding for those without -- I am sure that Christy Smith will be that representative.”
To earn Indivisible’s national endorsement, a candidate must clear a tough three-stage process that requires broad support from local Indivisible group members at multiple points. All endorsed candidates must have a strong progressive platform aligned with our movement’s values and the enthusiastic support of informed, energized voters in their district.
Indivisible CA-25 Simi Valley Porter Ranch is a locally-led progressive grassroots group responsible for nominating Christy Smith for Indivisible Action's national endorsement. The nomination was made by Leanna Brand, a member of the group.
