Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible, one of the nation’s leading national progressive grassroots organization, announced its endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden for President, its first endorsement of a presidential candidate since its founding:
“American democracy cannot survive another four years of Trump,” said Ezra Levin, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible. “Vice President Biden wasn’t among the top candidates for most Indivisible members in the primary. But as the presumptive Democratic nominee, he is demonstrating a commitment to building bridges to the grassroots. We may not always agree, but the Vice President will hear us out. We know we can partner with him to save our democracy and make big structural changes next year - but only if we elect him president this year.”
“As a movement, Indivisibles saved the ACA, flipped the House, and fought for impeachment. The strategy and values that guided us in those moments guides our approach to this election, which is the best opportunity we have to remove Donald Trump from the White House,” said Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible. “We’re going to keep up the fight for a more progressive platform, but in the fight against an evil agenda motivated by greed and racism, there can be no middle ground. Joe Biden must win, and Donald Trump and those who empower him must lose. This is why 95% of Indivisible’s membership voted to endorse the Vice President.”
In April 2019, Indivisible released the “Indivisible Pledge” committing to support the eventual Democratic nominee. Every major candidate, as well as over 33,000 local Indivisible leaders, signed it.
“A year ago this week, we launched the Indivisible Pledge that has since been signed by thousands of grassroots activists, Indivisible leaders from every state, and every major Democratic candidate for president. The pledge was a commitment to make the Democratic primary constructive, to rally behind the winner of the primary, and do the work to beat Trump in the general election,” said María Urbina, National Political Director. “We were proud to have been a part of a constructive, dynamic Democratic primary. Indivisibles helped drive support on key issues like democracy and immigration that will shape the platform and Democratic governing agenda. And today, we are ready to uphold the second part of our pledge to deliver for the communities whose very lives are at stake -- and join the Biden team to beat Trump in November.”
The national endorsement follows a rigorous voting process involving group leaders and members across the country from April 23rd through May 3rd. Biden passed through the voting stage with over 95% of the vote from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
