Washington, DC — Tonight, following the news of the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Indivisible Project issued the following statement:
“Justice Ginsburg was a champion of justice, a trailblazer for women, and an American icon.
“Justice Ginsburg was a tireless fighter for gender equality, and it was her dedication and brilliance as a lawyer for the ACLU that guaranteed equal protection under the law regardless of race or gender. Her work as an attorney and later as a judge and Supreme Court justice created a legacy for equality unlike any other.
“She will be remembered forever as a champion for women's rights, reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights, and equality for all. But Justice Ginsburg was also a champion for democracy at a time when the conservatives on the Supreme Court have viciously restricted millions of Americans’ ability to participate in it.
“It is clear what should happen now: we should mourn, we should honor her legacy, and we should allow the people to decide who will nominate her replacement. With voting already underway in states across the country, it would be a grave, irresponsible power grab for the current President or Congress move before the people are heard. The next President must be the one to nominate the next Supreme Court Justice. As Justice Ginsburg herself said, ‘My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed.’ We must honor that wish.”
