Washington, DC — The Indivisible Project’s associate policy director Elizabeth Beavers released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed a resolution to overturn Trump’s fake national emergency:
“Today, the House of Representatives showed us power still rests in the hands of the people. Trump used a made-up emergency in an attempt to go around Congress and voters to spend billions on a racist campaign promise. It’s absurd that Congress even has to go through this process. This was not an emergency. Instead, it was an illegal power grab rooted in hate that erodes our democratic norms and slides us further into autocracy.”
“We applaud the House for today’s vote, but this is only one step in a longer process. All eyes are now on the Senate, particularly Republicans who have been issuing tweets and statements of concern. Will they follow through by using their full powers to terminate this fake emergency? Or will they stand with Trump when they’re forced to choose? Congress has an obligation to rein in Trump’s authoritarian tendencies and prove that the government still works for the people. The Senate must now rise to the occasion by following suit, listening to the people and passing this resolution.”
