Washington, DC — Today, Indivisible launched Crush The Coup, aimed at defeating Republicans’ attempts at a MAGA coup in 2024 by focusing on winning key races in key state legislatures, in anticipation of the Moore v. Harper “independent state legislature theory” case.
"MAGA Republicans are plotting the 2024 coup right in front of us. Trump's Supreme Court is threatening to allow state legislatures overrule their voters and pick the president themselves. It's bonkers. It's anti-democratic. And it's a real threat,” said Ezra Levin, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible. “Whether their plot succeeds will come down to a handful of legislators in a handful of states who will win or lose their elections in just 5 weeks. That's why Indivisible is launching this Crush the Coup effort to rush support to the pro-democracy candidates in these states in the final weeks of the campaign. If we're successful, we'll crush the coup before it gets off the ground.”
This year, the conservative Supreme Court will hear Moore v. Harper, a case which advances the fringe “independent state legislature” theory, which would give state legislatures overwhelming power over their own elections. In that scenario, the 2024 presidential election could effectively be decided by the state legislatures of six swing states—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—all of which are trending blue in presidential elections but ruled by Republican state legislatures due to gerrymandering.
The Crush The Coup project identifies the 29 of the closest races across these states, and creates channels for donors and volunteers to easily split donations to the races that need it most in the final weeks, or set up a phone bank or letter-writing party to reach voters in those districts. The project will also support movement education and awareness around the threat of the Moore v. Harper case.
“The Moore v. Harper case is the conservative Supreme Court’s opportunity to give Republican-controlled state legislatures new fuel for the fire they’ve already started to burn our democracy to the ground,” said Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy at Indivisible. “This case would give outsized power to Trump acolytes in statehouses across the country. It would be a wonderfully wrapped gift from the conservative majority to MAGA extremists and proponents of the Big Lie.”
Crush The Coup launches as the Supreme Court begins its new session, and as outraged voters watch the final January 6th Committee hearings and the continuing legal revelations about the Trump family. The campaign’s website serves as a one-stop-shop to channel outrage into impactful action to stop a future coup.
Indivisible’s federal campaign work to hold the U.S. House and Senate continues, under the banner of the Give No Ground project, with multiple phone banks, deep canvasses, and more every week.
