Washington — Ezra Levin, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible, in response to reporting that negotiations on the President’s supplemental funding request have included making a number of Trump-era immigration policies permanent and severely restricting the US asylum process, released the following statement:
“Indivisible was founded and has been fueled by defeating Trump and Trumpism. Our movement was forged in opposition to Trump's cruel and inhumane policies, including the hateful and xenophobic attacks on immigrants and asylum seekers. We're deeply proud of the role our movement played in resisting his agenda, and in defeating him electorally.
“That is why we're incredibly alarmed by the potential for President Biden’s supplemental funding bill to enshrine a number of Trump's immigration policies permanently into law. Asylum seekers and vulnerable immigrants are in need of greater support, not persecution. This is a moment calling us to provide more compassion and protections for people seeking refuge, both at our own borders and around the world.
“Trump is not the president. We should be committed to cleaning off the moral stain of his dark legacy, rather than codifying it into law and handing a future administration more power to erode and dismantle our asylum and immigration system. We strongly urge Congress and the Administration to unequivocally take these proposals off the table.”
Indivisible joined nearly 200 organizations on November 9, 2023 urging President Biden to reject harmful changes to asylum law, and in a statement to Members of Congress on November 30, 2023 reiterating our opposition to such a deal.
