Washington, DC — Today, Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible, issued the following statement:
“The passage of the budget resolution is a huge triumph for progressives both in and out of Congress, who fought to move forward on an inclusive recovery for all. Despite the efforts of a group of corporate-backed conservative Democrats obstructing Biden’s vision for an inclusive recovery, progressives stuck together and ultimately passed a budget resolution that includes all of our progressive priorities.
Indivisible members from Hawaii, to Oregon, to New Jersey made it clear that Congress needs to pass a true recovery that addresses the multiple, historic, and overlapping crises like mass unemployment, racial injustice, a public health crisis, and climate change. Their activism worked, with numerous conservative Democrats backing down from their threat to derail recovery.
In addition to outside pressure, Progressives passed a budget resolution that will allow them to not only deliver on Biden’s vision for recovery, but expand upon it to ensure transformative investments in our communities—who have historically been left out of economic proposals and give them the resources needed to recover with dignity and thrive in the aftermath of this global crisis.
But the fight is far from over. The House must immediately turn to drafting a progressive inclusive recovery bill that lowers prescription drug prices for all Americans, expands Medicare, provides a path to citizenship, and includes generational investments in climate, housing, and the care economy. We will continue to fight alongside progressives to make sure the Senate passes the reconciliation bill before final passage of a smaller infrastructure package. We cannot afford to wait any longer for a full recovery that invests in and supports our communities.”
