Washington, DC — Today, Mary Small, acting National Policy Director for Indivisible, issued the following statement:
"We are grateful that millions of workers and families can breathe a small sigh of relief now that Congress is set to pass this long overdue package. But it did not need to be this way. The hardship felt by those experiencing food insecurity, unemployment, the threat of eviction, and the public health impacts of the pandemic has all been made far worse by the negligence of the Republican-controlled Senate. All of us should be furious that essential workers and struggling families are treated as expendable bargaining chips.
"We are particularly grateful to the grassroots activists and advocates who fought for the inclusion of direct cash assistance, in addition to unemployment benefits, in this bill. It is irresponsible that Congress was even considering a package that excluded this desperately needed and incredibly effective form of aid. It is also to the credit of members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus for responding to the needs of impacted communities and taking collective action to demand the addition of direct cash assistance.
“It should be obvious that this bill is still not a sufficient response to the current crises, and relief will be fleeting. What this bill will do is help people survive a bit longer, which is the bare minimum we should expect. Americans deserve more--and Republicans cannot be trusted to do anything other than prioritize corporations and the wealthy. Leaving them in power will only leave more Americans in poverty. We plan to keep fighting for the full and equitable recovery the people are demanding."
