Washington, DC — Indivisible’s co-executive directors Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin shared their reflections on Herb Sandler and his personal impact on their leadership:
"Indivisible grieves the passing of Herb Sandler and celebrates his commitment to supporting the growth of so many powerful progressive voices. He was a giant of progressive philanthropy, leading the way in countering decades of conservative investment with his big bets on new leaders. His strategic thinking and support led to the creation of important organizations like ProPublica and the Center for American Progress, and changed the conversation about what American values are. But for Indivisible, he was much more than that.
"For the last two years, we've counted ourselves as deeply fortunate to know Herb, and to benefit from his advice and guidance. Herb was brilliant, incisive, funny, kind, and a relentless force for justice. He was always thinking about the next stage for Indivisible, asking hard questions that pushed us forward. We will miss him deeply.
"We first met Herb in April 2017, early in the process of starting Indivisible. He told us about building his business together with his wife Marion, who passed away in 2012. He talked about how they divided up their roles and how they complemented each other. His love and respect for Marion and the joy he took in their partnership shone through in everything he said. It was quietly, deeply powerful.
"At the time, we were a three-month old startup struggling with how to structure our organization and just beginning to explore becoming co-executive directors together. It felt totally overwhelming. Hearing about Herb’s partnership with Marion gave us the confidence to co-lead Indivisible together. It was the first time we thought our crazy plan might work.
"Over the last two years we have been profoundly blessed to benefit from Herb’s wisdom, support, warmth, and humor. We are going to miss Herb deeply, but we are profoundly grateful to him for his contributions to a just world and to a progressive vision for the future."
