Washington, DC —
The Indivisible Project’s associate policy director Elizabeth Beavers released the following statement in support of the introduction of the Senate companion to the For the People Act:
“The Indivisible movement started organizing after Trump was elected, but it wasn’t just about Trump — it was about saving American democracy. As Republicans continue working to serve corporate interests and specifically to disenfranchise people of color, it is vital that Democrats show their commitment to ensuring that everyone has the unimpeded right to participate in our democracy. Getting H.R. 1 through the House was a critical step in that goal and the result of the grassroots’ tireless work since Trump was elected. Today, we welcome the introduction of the Senate companion to the For the People Act.
“By choosing to lead on strengthening our democracy in the face of Mitch McConnell’s obstruction and refusal to move the bill forward, Senate Democrats are signaling that they view the reforms Americans want as priorities. Democracy reform is the first step towards solving the many problems that lie before us. We must un-rig the rules and ensure that our government is truly led by the people. For this reason, we urge all senators to co-sponsor this bill.”
