WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Indivisible’s Director of Democracy Policy Meagan Hatcher-Mays released the following statement in response to the indictment of Trump for his role in the January 6 insurrection:
“For the first time in his life, Trump is beginning to face consequences for his actions. While this indictment cannot repair the irreparable damage caused by Trump’s apparent incitement of the deadly January 6 insurrection, it’s a critical step towards accountability.
“Republicans are going to try to downplay or distance themselves from this indictment, or pretend it isn’t a big deal that a former president encouraged his followers to charge into Congress to attempt to violently steal the presidency back for him. All Congressional Republicans care about is keeping their tenuous hold on power. That’s why they’re trying to push the ACE Act, an anti-voter bill that will disenfranchise millions of voters, boost the influence of billionaires and corporations in our elections, and make it easier for authoritarians like Donald Trump to ‘audit’ or otherwise challenge votes and election outcomes.
“In case it isn’t already crystal clear: Republicans only care about their power, and they will stop at nothing to stay in it. Trump is finally facing some consequences, but he’s just the loud, obnoxious tip of the iceberg. We’ll continue working to ensure they’re all held accountable, and we will take our democracy back.”
