Washington — Following years of organizing from grassroots advocates across the country, today the Senate has passed a historic reconciliation bill that takes climate action, reduces the costs of healthcare and prescription drugs, and takes steps to make the wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share in taxes. Andrew O’Neill, Associate Director for Economic Justice at Indivisible, released the following statement:
“This bill is a long time coming. Advocates and frontline communities have been calling for many of the provisions of this bill since before the current Congress was even elected, but grassroots activists and our Senate champions have finally gotten a reconciliation bill out of the chamber. Thanks to the leadership of Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the bill passed cleanly, without poison pill amendments that could have jeopardized its pathway to the president’s desk. This is unquestionably a victory for the American people and the future of our planet.
“House Democrats must follow suit, and quickly vote to pass this bill. That includes members of the caucus who occasionally enjoy playing the role of villain—holding this bill up in hopes of including favors for their rich donors would be contemptible, and we will be paying close attention to the House proceedings. We hope to soon be celebrating Democrats coming together and delivering on climate action, lower costs, and tax fairness for the American people.”
