Washington, DC — Today, Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Indivisible’s Director of Democracy Policy, released the following statement:
“We want to thank President Biden for committing to veto a MAGA bill that would have overturned a local D.C. law aimed at reforming the District’s policing system. Not only is this a win for home rule and legislative autonomy for the District of Columbia, it is a sound rejection of the House GOP’s bad faith attempts to force bad policy through Congress using ‘gotcha’ votes. It is critical to continue to push back on these efforts – every successful MAGA gotcha only emboldens them to be more nefarious and extreme.
"This is exactly what we want to see from the President on issues like this. In a split Congress, Democrats need to fight back against the GOP’s framing of hot-button issues, and present a clear vision about what we're for and what we're against. Today, Joe Biden did exactly that. This sets the tone for how Democrats should respond to Republican nonsense."
“Democrats rejected this bill unanimously in committee. Biden has made it clear that he stands on the right side of this issue. If the GOP insists on moving this anti-democratic bill forward, Indivisible looks forward to seeing Democrats stand with the president, voice their resounding opposition, and refuse to take the MAGA bait.”
