Senate Dems: Let’s Fucking Go.
The For The People Act must pass before Recess
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Indivisible’s Director of Democracy Policy, Meagan Hatcher Mays, issued the following statement:
“Once again, the For the People Act finds itself at a critical juncture. With the news that the Census data used in the congressional map-drawing process will now be released on Thursday, it is now more urgent than ever for the Senate to pass this bill into law, and ban partisan gerrymandering once and for all. If not, unscrupulous Republicans will draw themselves into a majority for the foreseeable future, despite regularly getting millions upon millions of fewer votes than their Democratic counterparts.
“The calendar waits for no one, not even the Senate Majority Leader. But if Chuck Schumer can make this happen, with basically no help from down Pennsylvania Avenue, he will be a hero. To be absolutely clear, though, he’s now got just six days to pull off this heroic feat in full. That means getting his caucus together for a vote on the bill and a vote on the rules change necessary to ensure its passage. Positive signals about the bill negotiations are great, but it is now time to turn them into a plan of action -- and fast.
“So, to Leader Schumer and Senate Democrats, we say: For more than two years, Indivisible groups and their allies have rallied in snow and in heat for the For The People Act, because they understand that the fate of our democracy is at stake. They've helped usher in a Democratic majority in the House and Senate, and won back the presidency from a petty tyrant. They've held thoughtful meetings in your offices, and demonstrated outside them. They've mainstreamed the idea of filibuster reform in each of your home states, one dinner-table conversation and highway honk-and-wave at a time, to make it possible for you to do your work in this moment. We’ve done our jobs. Our movement is now counting on you. Let’s fucking go.”
