WASHINGTON, DC--Leah Greenberg, Co-Executive Director of Indivisible issued the following statement:
“It is simply unacceptable when politicians campaign on popular progressive proposals, like lowering drug prices for everyone, only to sell out their constituents when Big Pharma pumps their re-election campaigns.
Today the Energy & Commerce Committee had the opportunity to deliver on those long held Democratic policy priorities—and President Biden’s vision for recovery—but Representatives Rice, Schrader, and Peters voted against lowering drug prices for millions of Americans struggling to decide between paying for their next meal or their medication.
They should be ashamed of themselves. Indivisible Nassau County and many other grassroots organizations spent the last couple days calling into their member’s office, trying to get Reps. Rice, Schrader, and Peters to put people over the profits of Big Pharma. Hearing the needs of their constituents didn’t sway them.
Rep. Kathleen Rice went so far as to vote down expanding critical vision, hearing, and dental services to Medicare beneficiaries. It is infuriating to see she does not care if her older constituents can’t get the care they need to live with dignity.
But we won’t let the few corporate-backed lawmakers deter us in fighting harder until we win lower prescription drugs and expanded quality healthcare coverage. House Democrats still have an opportunity to include the language that was passed through the Ways & Means Committee in the final reconciliation bill when the Rules Committee fixes any discrepancies in the packages reported to the committee.
This means we need all hands on deck to bring the heat on Representatives Rice, Schrader, Peters, and any other Congress members who would threaten to derail a transformational piece of legislation that would lower drug prices for millions of Americans.”
