Washington, DC — Today, Leah Greenberg, Co-Founder and Co-Executive Director for Indivisible, issued the following statement after West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin further stalled negotiations on the reconciliation bill :
“Once again, the corporate backed Senator Manchin has upended years-long negotiations with leadership and left key Democratic priorities on the cutting room floor without any chance of passage, threatening our climate and economy. We’re over it.
“Senator Manchin has consistently thwarted any attempts by this majority to pass long-standing Democratic priorities , like addressing the climate crisis, or reigning in skyrocketing prescription drug prices, or ensuring that the super-wealthy pay their fair share. His behavior throughout this Congress has made clear that his priorities do not lie with the people of West Virginia or with the Democratic majority, as he has worked hard to sabotage Biden’s legislative agenda, which would lift both his constituents and Democrats’ electoral chances. By consistently promoting the interests of fossil fuel companies and stalling climate policies Manchin has clearly demonstrated that he should not remain in a climate leadership position, and should be removed from his position as Chairman of the Energy and Natural Resources committee immediately. This is important not only for future climate policies, but for the health and strength of the Democratic Party. Members who actively sabotage Democrats' agenda and go against the party must be met with swift and strong consequences.
“In addition to quick action from Democratic leadership in the Senate, it is now incumbent upon President Biden to use the full force of the executive branch to deliver on the hugely popular policies the American people elected him to accomplish. Biden must stop waiting for corporate-backed Democrats and their bad faith negotiations and instead work with the Congressional Progressive Caucus and members of the party who have consistently strived to deliver real wins for the American people. We don’t have any more time to waste.”
