Donald Trump is an existential threat to our country. He has directly attacked our democracy and must be removed from office immediately. The attack of 1/6/2021 is just another chapter in an excruciatingly long novel titled ‘Why Trump is Unfit for Public Office.’ The Senate should return immediately to convict and remove him.
We applaud the House of Representatives for passing tonight’s resolution calling for Vice President Mike Pence and the cabinet to invoke their powers under the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and immediately remove Donald Trump from office. But even after last week’s deadly coup attempt where a mob, at Trump’s urging, stormed the Capitol with intentions of causing life-threatening harm to Members of Congress and the Vice President himself, we do not expect Pence to finally do the right thing for our country and stand up to his boss.
Four years ago, we wrote a guide to resisting Donald Trump, and it worked. We’ve defeated Trump. We’ve defeated his cronies. We won in Georgia and took the Senate. But the victory isn’t the election, it’s the legislation. Now, it’s time for us to defeat the forces that allowed him to rise—and that continue to threaten our democracy.
We simply cannot just wait for Trump to leave office as his threat level to our democracy continues to increase. The House of Representatives must draw up articles of impeachment immediately, move quickly to vote on them, and send them to the Senate for a speedy trial, where Trump must be convicted and disqualified from ever holding federal office again.
The House has shown they are ready to fight for a truly inclusive and healthy democracy. The Senate must now follow suit and move this legislation forward.
Amy Coney Barrett is a threat to the health and safety of millions of Americans. Mitch McConnell and the Republican Senate are a threat to the health and safety of our very democracy. And despite what McConnell may claim from the Senate floor, this isn't over. If he thinks that we "won't be able to do much about this," he should think again. We can and will defeat his disastrous agenda and restore balance to the courts. It all starts on November 3.
As these sham hearings conclude, Indivisible is proud to announce that we hit our goal for total voter contacts nearly three weeks early—20 million voter contact attempts, four times what we drove ahead of the Blue Wave in 2018.
While we work to resoundingly defeat Donald Trump in this election, preparing to also protect the results of this election isn’t just reasonable, it’s necessary.
The idea that Amy Coney Barrett could replace RBG on the Supreme Court is an insult to RBG’s life and legacy. But Amy Coney Barrett isn’t the point: The fact that Republicans in the Senate are moving forward with a Supreme Court confirmation fight at all is a horrific abdication of their duties.
