We are pleased to see that President Biden’s FY23 Budget reflects his commitment to investing in the American people and ensuring the wealthiest individuals and corporations start paying their fair share. The inclusion of the billionaire's tax is a welcome addition toward that goal. We are also deeply disappointed to see President Biden follow in the steps of the many administrations before him, in increasing the amount of taxpayer dollars going to an already bloated defense budget.
As the Senate moves closer to a floor vote to confirm Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court, two things are blatantly obvious: her qualifications are impeccable and despite that, Republicans are committed to making a fool of themselves. In the midst of their thoroughly disrespectful questioning of Judge Jackson, she nevertheless displayed her sharp intellect, patience, and commitment to the law.
Even as we continue to push for Congress to end its political theater and finally deliver on his legislative agenda, our network is calling for simultaneous and complementary executive action. We echo the Congressional Progressive Caucus’s call: President Biden can and must use the full authority of his office to deliver change wherever possible, as soon as possible.
Indivisible announced the formal launch of “Let’s Go Joe!”, a campaign to press the Biden White House to take executive action on major issues, beginning with two popular and strategic causes: canceling student debt and declaring a climate emergency. Americans are looking to President Biden more than ever for steady leadership in the midst of crises in Ukraine and the next phases of the pandemic. We’re eager for him to seize the moment on other crises where he promised to lead, including the student debt crisis and climate catastrophe.
We’ll be keeping up the heat on President Biden to move his legislative agenda through the Senate while simultaneously using his executive authority to swiftly and significantly improve people’s lives through climate action, lower drug prices, fighting predatory loans and more. And as the results in tonight’s primaries showed, there’s a new guard of progressive voices that need our support to make it to Congress and help Biden deliver on his agenda.
Greg Casar is part of a new generation of progressive leaders who know the status quo can’t stand. As a member of Congress, he’ll still be an organizer at heart, the kind of activist legislator we need more of to win real change.
As excited as we are to see Judge Jackson make history, we know that one new justice won’t be enough to restore balance to the Supreme Court itself, whose conservative justices have happily turned the institution into a weapon in our new culture wars. The Court is no longer an institution that we can count on to protect our constitutional rights or our democracy. Judge Jackson will be a welcome addition to the Court, but if we really want to change things, we must add seats as well.
Judge Jackson’s nomination is an inspiring step forward in ensuring the Supreme Court looks like the country it represents, but she is not a token or a savior. We must confirm Judge Jackson, and then we must expand the Court and send her four new colleagues.
